Proposal on Including Nuclear Power into China’s Green Power System
“China should include nuclear power into the green electricity certification system as soon as possible to achieve the full coverage of non-fossil energy electricity by green certification.” Mr. Yang Changli stated that this not only meets the market demand for user purchases, but also gives full play to the important role of nuclear power in the national carbon reduction, and promotes the development of new quality productivity of nuclear energy.
Nuclear power industry deeply implements the decisions and deployments made by the Party Central Committee to continuously facilitate high quality development. By far, the total installed nuclear power capacity of operating units and construction units in mainland China has exceeded 100 million kilowatts, accounting for 21.2% of the world’s total installed nuclear power capacity of operating units and construction units. With safety operation performance of nuclear power ranking among the world’s top, the electricity generation in 2023 accounted for nearly 5% in the country, which is equivalent to a reduction of 350 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions compared with coal-fired power generation. Nuclear power is playing a greater role in guaranteeing national energy security, building a new energy system and helping to realize the goal of “carbon peak and neutrality”.
“As a stable, reliable and high-quality green and low-carbon electricity source, nuclear power has not yet been included into China’s green certification and green power system, making it the only non-fossil energy source excluded from the system. This is not conducive to contributing to the realization of the country's “carbon peak and neutrality” goal, nor is it conducive to the long-term development of the nuclear power industry.” Mr. Yang Changli said, as high-efficiency energy, nuclear power has high energy density, no intermittency, less constraints by natural conditions, and stable supply capacity, and is an important option to enhance energy security.
“Nuclear power is a stable, reliable and high-quality green and low-carbon electricity, its inclusion in the green electricity trading system would bring significant benefits,” Mr. Yang Changli said.
