CGN Fujian Ningde Nuclear Power Plant Unit 5 Main Construction Commenced

At 10:58 on July 28, 2024, the first concrete pouring for the nuclear island of Unit 5 at China General Nuclear Power Group's Ningde Nuclear Power Plant in Fujian was announced, which marks the official start of the main construction of this HPR1000 unit and commencement of the construction phase of the Ningde Nuclear Power Project Phase II.

Located in Taimushan Town, Fuding City, Ningde, Fujian Province, the Ningde Nuclear Power Project plans to build six gigawatt-level nuclear power units in two phases and is the first nuclear power plant in Fujian Province to start construction and commence operations. The project's Phase I, consisting of four units, commenced construction on February 18, 2008, and was completed and put into operation on July 21, 2016. As of June 30, 2024, it has generated a total of over 290 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, equivalent to saving over 87.58 million tons of standard coal and reducing over 238 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Units 5 and 6 of Phase II were approved by the state on July 31, 2023, utilizing China's indigenous third-generation nuclear power technology HPR1000. Each unit is capable of generating nearly 10 billion kilowatt-hours annually, sufficient to meet the annual electricity needs of 1 million people.  

"The construction of Units 5 and 6 of the Ningde Nuclear Power Project Phase II will further enhance the proportion of clean energy in Fujian Province, injecting a more robust clean energy impetus into the high-quality economic and social development of Fujian Province," stated Tian Huiyu, Chairman, and General Manager of Fujian Ningde Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. Ningde nuclear power units will continue to introduce and implement advanced construction technology, promote the application of "smart sites", build digital nuclear power plants, and drive high-quality construction of nuclear power projects with new quality productive forces.

Additionally, the Phase I expansion project of Unit 1 at CHNG Shandong Shidao Bay Nuclear Power Plant also commenced construction today. This project was contracted to China Nuclear Power Engineering Co., Ltd. (CNPEC) for engineering design and technical services, joint equipment procurement and supply, and construction management technical support. This project is the first HPR1000 project undertaken by CNPEC outside CGN. Subsequently, CNPEC. will fully leverage the specialized and centralized advantages of HPR1000 batch construction, collaborating with CHNG, the owner company, to promote high-quality construction of the project, jointly creating a new model of central enterprise cooperation.
